Alaskan Rainforest Kayak Journey — One of the great surviving ecosystems of the planet, a wilderness inhabited and utilized by many people, the rainforest of coastal Alaska presents a unique opportunity for us to redefine the human relationship to the biosphere. Kayaking in Southeast Alaska has become the life passion of speaker Dan Kiely. In the past seven summers, he has paddled over 400 days (mostly solo) through many areas of the islands and mainland coast that encompass the Tongass rainforest. From the world-renowned Glacier Bay to the rarely visited shores of Kuiu Island and the outer coast of Chichagof Island, he has wandered and photographed the waters, landscapes, and animals of the Alaska coast. Come enjoy a journey through this extraordinary land and seascape and find inspiration to expand one's kayaking adventures. Wintertime Pruning & Tree Care — In this hands-on class, we'll focus on wintertime pruning and the culture of fruit and other trees. Learn essentials of plant growth, natural (and other) tree forms, and the effects and benefits of pruning. Learn about selection and "training" of young plants, pruning for longevity and for high-yield, renovative strategies, and how to prune older trees. We'll also cover tool selection and care, methods of work, and both timing and "dose" in pruning. Class is taught by Paul Johnsen, longtime landscaper and arborist, past docent at the Strybing Arboretum, and teacher of many classes on tree care. Bring shears if you have them. Class will take place in a Berkeley yard with apple, plum, and landscape trees. MUST CALL to register and for location. Location: Berkeley. Time: 10am - 1pm. Bay Area Relocalize: Preparing for the End of Cheap Oil — In response to the growing concerns around climate change and the end of cheap oil, Post Carbon Institute has launched an exciting new project called Bay Area Relocalize. The project is assessing our region's use of resources and developing a model for local communities to bring the production of our food, energy and essential goods closer to home. We are connecting with neighborhoods, businesses, and community groups to mobilize around reducing our consumption of resources from outside the region and replacing them with local resources. Examples include creating community gardens, installing solar panels on homes and businesses, capturing rainwater, improving public transit, and building affordable homes nearer to where we work. This 2-hour event hosted at the Ecology Center will feature a panel of presenters from the project and Q&A. Proceeds will benefit the Bay Area Relocalize project. Students engage in an intensive academic and experiential curriculum focused on peace, justice, and sustainability. California Rare Fruit Growers Annual Scion Exchange — Grafting wood and cuttings for rooting. Grafting demonstrations for beginners. CRFG is a non-profit organization of backyard gardeners and horticulture professionals who are interested in food plants which are uncommon in their area. A quick hike around the marsh will familiarize you with the local species before you head into the arts workshop.
